Simply ‘Mother’

“The birth of a child gives birth to a mother”- we often don’t consider the matter into this light, but it’s true that only after a child’s birth, does the term ‘mother’ actually come into existence. The woman exists, but not the mother; a mother is as new as her little baby is. The first word a baby learns to utter is ‘mother’; it is in this word that the baby sees its existence. As the child grows- up, the child learns to create a separate world for itself, but the umbilical cord that still connects the two lingers, grows stronger and sometime stretches to no end. The mother is held as the object of affectionate reverence in Indian Culture. The mother, specifically the woman, is the homemaker, the first teacher of the child, the person who lovingly transmits the culture of this ancient land to its heirs in their most formative years. In India, the mother is visualized as a powerful, compassionate human being, who is full of love and grace.
The Puranas and Shastras stress the role of women as mothers and extol the mothers who instilled high ideals in the minds of the children of the land. The Vedas speak of Maitreyi and Gargi as great scholars and spiritual heroines. Gargi was well revered in the assembly of Vedic pundits for her mastery over abstruse problems of the spirituality. In recent history, we have Jija Bai, the mother of Chatrapathi Shivaji who raised him on the epics and Puranas, and brought him up as a brave human being. Jija Bai has been one of the strongest influences on the great Maratha leader Shivaji. She was a great source of inspiration for Shivaji and was responsible for cultivating the spirit of bravery and humanism in him. Shivaji shared one characteristic with his mother, which was the inability to compromise. This inherited trait was part of his strength of character and it remained with him throughout his life.
The Mother, from time immemorial, has always been a figure to whom the child is attached the most. It is in her that the child sees the whole universe. In fact in a child’s upbringing, the mother plays the most crucial role. Not only is the important role of instilling values, purpose and responsibility best met by a child’s biological parents at an early age, but so too is the cultivation of a sense of security and well-being. Studies in the bonding and attachment theory have shown that a child’s emotional and mental well-being is inexorably tied up with continuous, sustained, stable physical and emotional contact between the mother and child. A mother can be said to be the first teacher of a child. Starting from uttering the first word to responding to others, a child learns everything from the mother. She is the example in social behavior that the child sees and learns to imitate. In fact even in today’s globalised world, the role of the mother has been stressed immensely and it is with regard to this that the schools have also been organizing regular parent-teacher meetings so that the children benefit from them. The mothers need to spend as much quality time as they can with their children, because children from the time of their birth can easily identify the warmth of their mother and associate with that warmth. The warmth of love that a mother gives is a child’s social baseline.

Nature: Child’s Utopia

“Come forth into the light of things, let Nature be your teacher”- William Wordsworth. Nature is probably the greatest teacher of all times.  Nature is calm, pleasant and majestic; but it works on its own conditions. Nature comprises of all living beings; trees, animals, birds, insects, reptiles, aquatic beings and human beings. Humans are called the most beautiful creation of the great Creator; but unfortunately we humans are destroying this magic of Nature by seamlessly affecting its splendor. We usually forget the great role played by trees in our lives. Can we imagine this world without trees? Probably not, because these are the source of oxygen, the basic need of every living being to survive.  Moreover, throughout human history, trees have been powerful symbols. Trees symbolize life, growth, reaching down to the ground and up to the sky at the same time. The Druids of early Britain worshipped trees, the Greeks assigned them spirits, called dryads, and individual trees have been seen as sacred by many people at different times. For Ameridian people of the northern Pacific coast, trees are used to create totem poles that serve as a visual representation of ancestry or historical and mythological happenings.
Nature’s eons of intelligence, perfection and beauty are in us as they are in all of Nature. In the earlier days, we used to grow up in a close relation with nature. Keeping a close relation with nature also makes a positive impact on our health, psychology and character. Developmental psychology research suggests that consciousness formed in the childhood period is highly effective on subsequent periods of human life. So this is the time in a child’s life when the child can develop consciousness about different things. While talking about child development, child interactions with nature become a very important factor. Studies have shown how children’s play in the natural environment stimulates their motor fitness. Nature affords possibilities and challenges for the children to explore their own abilities. It is unfortunate that children can’t design their outdoor play environment. Research on children’s preferences shows that outdoor spaces designed by children would not only be fully naturalized with plants, trees, flowers, water, dirt, sand, mud, animals or insects, but also would be rich with a wide variety of play opportunities of every imaginable type.
The world once offered thousands of delights of free play to children. They had access to all natural things like fields, forests, streams and yards; but now we have restricted this freedom of children by providing them lifeless toys like soft toys, video games, and many other technical devices. Now people are gradually feeling the importance of nature in child development. The western countries have come up with different programs to provide children a natural environment where they can develop rapidly and also make them aware of the importance of nature in every walk of our lives. In India also, schools are adopting measures to implement nature friendly environment. The classrooms are designed in a manner to infuse a consciousness towards nature among children. But this initiative needs more support from parents, teachers, common men and every other person to make the world more greener and happier place to live in.

A Space of My Own

The balance or imbalance of our hormones effects our emotions, and these are in turn affected by colors, shapes, textures and patterns. All these excite our senses and also leave a psychological effect on us. Though all these are non-living things, but can convey a thousand feelings. We become excited when we come across anything interesting such as when we watch a fight sequence in a movie or even while playing video games. Thus visuals have a direct impact on us.  Imagine yourself on an engaging walk along a beautiful forest trail. Every bend in the trail hints at a new view lying just ahead and prompts you to keep moving forward, exploring one mystery after another. One often-cited study showed that patients recovering from surgery in hospital experienced less pain and were discharged more quickly when they were housed in rooms containing windows that showed views of natural, outdoor setting. Moreover, colors, shapes, textures and patterns are associated with different modes and emotions. Certain colors can calm us while others stimulate our minds. Design psychology supports fearless home makeover, bold with colors to lend emotional support yet restrained, without over-filled rooms, to provide background for people and harmonious living. Our home is a very vital goal achievement tool which sets us up in the right frame of attitude and mindset.

We should be creating a cognitive environment for a place where we find ourselves spending a lot of time in and doing a lot of thinking & decision making work. While choosing decorative items for homes, we should choose those accessories that support positive memories and also magnetize us towards home. Not only the young people, but the children and the aged ones are also affected by the surrounding environment. In fact, the children are mostly affected by the environment. So we should be cautious while designing rooms for kids. Starting from the furniture to the wall textures and decorative items, everything has a definite affect on their psychology. The kids should be provided enough space where they can move freely. Moreover, fill a basket with oversized, ‘coffee table’ books from the library. These tend to be filled with beautiful, inspiring photography that will spark conversation and interest. Create a lap book or unit study around a favorite hobby, period in history, musician, author or animal of your child’s choosing. As light also plays a significant role, so every corner of the room should be illuminated enough and there should also be space through which natural light can enter the room.

Scientific observation has established that education is not what the teacher gives; education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment. Thus the schools are also giving importance on designing school interior according to the child’s needs. It is observed that school decor inspires children the most and help them concentrate on their studies. The play schools and nurseries these days decorate the classes with different animated characters that depict a story and also provide the kids with items that inspire them towards creative works. By understanding some key findings in effects of interior décor on kids, we can see how subtle changes in materials, designs, lighting and placement of furniture can help us providing a healthy life to our children.

A New Dimension to the Indian Education System

“Music is moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything”- Plato. Music is the natural progression from the resolute pace of rhythm. Of all the primary arts, none can be as ethereal as music. Its mysteriousness makes music one of the most popular art forms. Music possesses Godly power and paves the way towards salvation. Whatever language it may be in, music is an expression of the emotions of every living being. We need to open our senses to feel the music that is spread in every corner of the world. The language may be different, but the feel in music is one and the same. In the ancient times, before the evolution of the spoken language, people used to communicate with each other through sound waves. When these sound waves are synchronized in a rhythmical manner, music takes birth.

Music floats like the wind in every corner of our colorful country, India. It is said that the origin of Indian music dates back to the Vedas. Raga in Indian music consists of Dhwani (tune), Swara (notes) and Varna (form), which together colors or beautifies our minds. The Indian music is enriched with classical and folk traditions contributed by different cultures from time to time.  It is believed that different Ragas in Indian music have miraculous powers. They have the power to inflame fire on water, can shower rain and do many other miracles. In ancient India, the Gurus used to employ this power of music to impart education in the Gurukuls. Music formed an integral part of ancient Indian education system. The Sishyas (students) in the Gurukul were given musical wisdom in those days. The transfer of musical tradition through the oral system between Guru and Shishya is illustrative of how deeply personalized music was to our culture.

According to research, music education before the age of seven has been shown to have lasting effect on a child’s intelligence. Elementary music education, in that sense, is paramount. Music is the natural mood of expression for a child. If one notices little children playing, very often one can see them making up their own songs and tunes in which they are absolutely immersed unaware of the sounds being created.  Modern day schools are also emphasizing on the importance of music and are imparting music education in the syllabus of the school. It has been noticed that kids who practice their instruments everyday develop good organizational skills. Moreover, music can help a child who doesn’t excel academically build self confidence from within. Behavioral studies have also proved that children associated with music are less likely to participate in activities of violence, substance abuse and adjust better to issues of authority. Music even benefits the school because it leads to the full development of an individual, which is the prime goal of education. Now the time has come for the educationists in India to realize the potency of music and take that final step to integrate it into our education system.

India is Coming Online – Great step in the field of education

In a survey conducted on the effects of online education’ by the Ministry of Education in the Govt. of India, students who signed up for  online classes or registered themselves for a distance education course, actually performed better than those who took the same courses in a traditional classroom setting. Also, Students who receive a combination of online and face-to-face instruction performed the best. It is obvious that online education has entered India and is here to stay! In tracing the history of online education, the report read that, it was the launch of the World Wide Web in 1991 that dynamically changed the way education was perceived earlier from being static to a dynamic mode of exchanging information, ideas, and communicating with one another. Distances across the globe have suddenly bridged closer and people from all over the globe to connect with each other at an amazing speed.

This new form of virtual communication began to serve as a new medium between educators and students across the world leading to an enormous impact on the world of education. New forms of online education have now begun to surface as a result. Tracing the evolution of online education, the history of online education began way back in the 1980s, a number of corporate using computer-based programs to train new employees. With the advent of the Internet companies realized they could train new recruits remotely and chat with them online.
The biggest discovery perhaps was that the Internet actually helped companies cut costs because they didn't have to hire trainers because most employees were trained online. Corporate with branches across the world sent their staff on business visits or projects with a quick online language training program fitted into their tight schedule. The distance learning organization CAL Campus introduced the first entirely online curriculum by integrating the World Wide Web in 1994. However, the online material was almost entirely text and the graphics if at all were small and poor quality and while homework assignments could be posted online, most students were still required to print off their assignments and mail them in to the professor. With computer technology growing in leaps and bounds, a number of computer mushroomed throughout India. Through the webcams, lessons could now be recorded and uploaded and gradually virtual classrooms became the next best thing in education compared to the traditional classrooms. Technology had reached a point where assignments could now be submitted online, bypassing the need to print or mail anything. There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to taking online education courses. Full-time workers, hospitalized individuals, and others who are unable to attend traditional, in-class sessions can benefit greatly from the flexibility of online courses. On the other hand, it is an unfortunate reality that the quality of education one receives at an online school can be mediocre in comparison to the quality of education one receives at a traditional school. Today, Indian school children use a laptop to browse a new self assessment and diagnostic Internet site tool in Hyderabad and IT professionals like Ms. Shetty are enrolling for an online education course conducted by the Xavier Labor Relations Institute in Jamshedpur, in the remote northern Indian state of Jharkhand. The online education market in India today generates about $200 million in revenue, and industry experts expect it to touch $1 billion by the end of the decade. The winning edge swivels around getting domain related knowledge from top-notch professionals without disrupting fast-track careers. India has taken a great step in the field of education and it’s here for life!

Get the best opportunity – Make the future of your child bright

The children of the British royal family or for that matter even the royal families in India that originated from the kings that ruled over Princely states at that time were all tutored at home. There was a teacher for every discipline to teach those who were to take up the royal throne as successors. These tutors were the best in their respective subjects because the state of the country depended on how these children would rule when they grew up and that in turn would show the people how well tutored and well informed they were.  It makes a difference when a child gets the best of education on a one- to -one level. That’s why even the ancient schools of learning whether it was Nalanda or Bodhgaya, had students enrolled in small numbers and the quality of education was superior. There are a few schools traditional in their outlook towards education with a  teacher -student ratio displaced from the ideal, and there are others, more modernized in their outlook, that restrict themselves to the low teacher- student ratio.  In the process of choosing a school, your child obviously deserves every chance possible to make sure that they capitalize on all their natural abilities and grow into their full potential regardless of the profession they choose for themselves in the future. Online learning can provide your children with some of the most amazing opportunities by extending their traditional educational reach well beyond the classroom. Thanks to the virtual environment and virtually limitless forums, tools, applications and resources that you can find online, your child has the opportunity to develop their natural skills and also generate a host of  new skill sets.

There are times when children fail at academics and have to lose out on a year. In such cases, instead of feeling bad, they can always involve themselves in educational pursuits outside of the classroom to get access to a world of opportunities. Online educational games have made learning an easy task, where children get excited about learning more through a wide variety of online education based games. These latest online learning opportunities help them build up a healthy sense of competition within themselves. Also, with the majority of these online learning opportunities being free of charge, the world of the Internet is at their disposal to build or break their lives depending on what they use these opportunities for. With a variety of freely downloadable E-Books, children can read the best of traditional classics or modern fiction at the click of a mouse. Different children learn at a different pace and customizing their online learning experience can give them the best of an academic program tailored to their capacity, pace of learning and subject of interest. As far as schools are concerned, it is their responsibility to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all their students, based on the academic curriculum. That’s why most International schools offer children with a host of extra and co-curricular activities right from horse riding to polo, to gymnastics, swimming and a variety of International languages to choose from.  Don’t you think it’s high time all the schools in India had an equal opportunities policy?
